FAIRFAX COUNTY, Virginia (Reuters) – .

President Barack Obama vowed on Wednesday to look at all options to spur job growth and revive the U.S. economy after the worst recession since the Great Depression..

"We are moving forward on a number of economic fronts and we are going to explore each and every avenue that I can think of that will lead to job creation and economic growth," Obama said in Fairfax County, Virginia..

Obama is facing a rising clamor to take new steps to lift the economy and jump-start job growth as the U.S. unemployment rate edges toward 10 percent..

He was speaking after new data showed U.S. retail sales, excluding auto purchases, rising for a second month in September, raising cautious optimism that consumer spending could support the economy's slow recovery..

"The fact is, as difficult as these times are ... we are moving in the right direction. Our economy is in better shape today than when I took office," Obama said..
